ABOUT US

WHO WE ARE

221 is a 'self-help' organisation run entirely by volunteers. We are committed to helping people who are finding it hard to cope with all the emotional and practical challenges of long-term relationship break-up.

For many couple, divorce can be a mutual and considered agreement, but for the vast majority, the break-up of a marriage comes as a shock which causes intense mental anguish and has a devastating effect on the family.

We know the desperate need to TALK, and provide a space where people can talk freely and in confidence.  All participants and volunteers have experienced divorce or separation, and the empathy and support within the group creates a very caring environment.

WHAT WE DO

221 facilitates monthly meetings to enable people to get together and talk with others in similar circumstances and at varying stages of recovery.

When someone has experienced the break-up of a marriage or partnership, often of  a considerable number of years, we know that it takes time to recover.   Confidence  and self esteem has been shattered and it can take a while to find the motivation to move on.  We provide support that is unconditional and for as long as is needed.

Our groups are very aware of the overwhelming sense of loneliness that can cause a lot distress.  Between the monthly meetings we encourage social activities which are organised by group members.

In addition to the monthly meetings, 221 runs a six week Programme of Recovery entitled 'Bitter or Better'

WHY 221 WORKS

Going through a divorce can be very traumatic and there is currently very little help available for anyone searching for support.  221 offers immediate help through the initial email contact and subsequent introduction to a group.

221 is for anyone, at any stage of divorce or separation.  Many participants have lost a marriage of twenty to thirty years and feel that there is no future.  Together we find that future.

The majority of our groups are hosted by churches that are committed to helping their local communities.  They are fully focussed on reaching out to those who are hurting and welcome people of all faiths and none.  There is no religious teaching and we embrace everyone unconditionally.

The process of divorce can be bewildering and alarming.  Being with others who are going through, or have been through the process, is hugely reassuring.  The joint experiences within the group are considerable and offer invaluable guidance.

Talking with people who truly understand the situation is a great comfort and can be a lifeline. We provide an environment where participants can talk freely about their challenges and fears, knowing that confidentiality is respected and prioritised.

221 has been organising groups for over twenty years and we know that they play a vital part in recovery from divorce.
